About Alzheimer's, a persistent, personal disease:
It is the only cause of death of the top 10 in America that cannot be prevented, cured, or slowed, and every 67 seconds someone new develops it: Alzheimer’s disease. It is the most common form of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other intellectual abilities that seriously interfere with daily life.
People with early stages of the disease experience minor memory loss, while those with late-stage Alzheimer’s lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environments.
As a progressive disease, it will worsen over time: Current treatments can only temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms; they aim to improve the quality of life for those affected and to assist their caregivers.
This devastating disease has personally affected Witmer Public Safety Group, Inc. (WPSG) in a profound way, as in August 2011 Jim Witmer, founder and CEO, received an official diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer’s, which affects approximately 200,000 people in America.
“We had been suspicious that there was a serious memory issue for almost two years before that,” said Jim’s son and WPSG Vice President of Sales James Witmer. “It was becoming more and more clear that some memories just weren't sticking. Shortly after we got the diagnosis, we shared our situation with our management team and during this time we began to take precautions for the sake of the business.”
In January 2013, Jim decided he was ready to share his health situation with the company. In October 2014, in an effort to raise funds for the upcoming Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, WPSG shared Jim’s struggle with their customer family in an effort to raise funds for the cause. Since then, WPSG has donated more than $10,000 both during and after participating in the walk. In 2015, WPSG, in addition to their fundraising efforts, will also act as a walk sponsor.
WPSG employees have joined the cause as well by participating in the company’s “Casual for a Cause” program, where employees can purchase stickers to wear jeans at work. All proceeds – $2,000 in individual donations since June 2015 – will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. Additionally, the #ENDALZ t-shirt campaign, planned in conjunction with the “Casual for a Cause” program, will also directly benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.
“This year we've taken a different approach to raising funds by designing a fire-themed t-shirt framed around the cause,” Witmer said. “All proceeds from the sale of these shirts will go towards the efforts to end Alzheimer's. Even if you aren't personally affected by this disease we urge you to join with us in this worthy cause and buy a t-shirt. Let's do what we can to #ENDALZ.”
