A classic, rugged matte finish complete with protection, durability, performance and comfort.

All the design features and proven performance of the popular Cairns 1010 traditional Cairns helmet on which it was based. But the Cairns 1044 sports a rugged matte finish that echoes the quiet confidence of experience. Like the glossy 1010, the newer 1044 offers the proven protection and exceptional durability of Cairns’ DuraGlass fiberglass composite shell. The through-color composite resists chipping and cracking. And because its matte finish isn’t painted, everyday nicks and scratches are harder to see.

  • Tough, through color, DuraGlas® fiberglass and high-temp resin composite resists cracking and chipping
  • Perfect combination of durability and performance in a lightweight design
  • Three-position, rear-ratchet height adjustment ensures a secure and comfortable fit
  • Six-way overhead strap suspension system reduces shock transmission at the top of the helmet while providing a snug, comfortable fit
  • NFPA-1971-2018 Compliant

Lower profile. Superior balance. Cairns fire helmets have some of the lowest ride-heights in the market. Compare the crown clearance of the Cairns 1044 (or 1010), with its advanced thermal impact cap, to other traditional helmets. The distance from the inside of the Cairns 1044 shell to the suspension straps is less than 2-1/2 inches. Most competitive helmets, even those without an impact cap, are actually taller at more than 2-3/4 inches high. The difference in balance and wear-ability are readily apparent, especially when worn for long periods under the stressful conditions they’re designed for. You can count on these classic, traditional helmets to look good, stay comfortable, and perform dependably—providing the protection you need—for many years of hard use.

MSA's exclusive Defender Visor— Never lose or misplace your eye protection again. There’s no other NFPA compliant helmet eyewear as compact or as convenient. The MSA Defender Visor actually retracts into the helmet’s shell where it stays clean and instantly ready to deploy. Cairns’ unique design allows the visor to be raised and lowered in an instant, even with gloved hands. And don't be concerned about it slipping; the Defender stays securely stowed until YOU pull it down. It’s optically correct lens eliminates peripheral distortion. Its sleek, close-fitting profile leaves nothing sticking out or hanging off the helmet to get caught on something in zero-visibility conditions or throw the helmet off balance. And maintenance is simple. The visor can be quickly disconnected from the helmet without tools, allowing fast lens changes, even during field use.  Prepare for maximum efficiency.

A sleek, low-profile, NFPA-compliant goggle designed to fit comfortably over most prescription glasses. The high-temperature frame allows fast lens replacement. Patented Speed Clips make strap adjustments easy, even with gloves on. The snap-on/snap-off mounting system consists of simple low-profile posts on the sides of the helmet. Goggles can be used alone or with a faceshield. They can be stored on the front or back of the helmet, or quickly removed, as desired.

Bourke Eye Shield. Traditional styling with these clear bourke eyeshields.  Bourke eyeshields exceed US-OSHA (CFR 1910) NBSIR-1977.

Note: Images shown are the old bourkes. NEW NFPA bourkes will ship on helmets ordered with bourkes.

Eye Protection Combinations (Defender Visor with Bourke eyesheild): NFPA-1971-2018 Compliant

4”  Tuffshield® Visor. Although it costs you no more than the clear and smoke visor options, we at TheFireStore.com believe the Tuffshield visor offers distinct advantages. We supply it as the standard equipment visor on all Cairns Traditional and Deluxe Configuration helmets for some very good reasons:  Tuffshield is significantly more heat resistant. The Tuffshield Defender visor is heat-resistant up to 500° F. Other visor materials will start to melt at about 345° Tuffshield is a heavier grade material with more impact resistance. As the name implies, it’s just tougher.

The slight yellowish tint helps you see better, day or night. Like a pair of amber shooting glasses, they filter out harsh wavelengths and glare, improving contrast and revealing more detail under all lighting conditions—including looking at flames.  4” amber Tuffshield visor is compliant with NFPA 1971, 2013 edition. All visors meet ANSI Z87.1+ impact requirements.

Fantastic

by

This is by far the best helmet in my opinion. I've tried others and it felt like I was balancing a paint bucket on the top of my head. It's well built, balanced, can take a beating, and will still look great after getting beat up. Some neck-less people will say it's heavy, but it really is not heavy at all. I instantly fell in love with the defender visor, your helmet can look like it was thrown into a volcano as a sacrifice to the fire gods and the defender will still be nice and clear, and not all scratched up and charred, unlike eye protection mounted outside of the helmet. It's pretty comfortable, I've worn it endless hours and had no neck pain. Seriously, Cairns did an outstanding job designing this. Well done, pat yourselves on the back.

Amazing!

by

I bought this helmet when I was a junior three years ago, since then it has seen many extermly hot fires. I wore this helmet through my FireFighter 1 class. The borrekes are nice untill you get a couple hot fires and the curle under! The tetrons that come on the helmet also melt very easily.

Great helmet

by

Very nice helmet feels very comfortable.

Love This Helmet

by

I have only had this helmet for a little under a month, but this is one of the best fire helmets out there. I have tried the ben 2 low rider and loved the 1044 way more. Highly recommend.

Excellent Helmet

by

Our entire volunteer department is slowly changing over to the black Cairns 1044's with the 4"" face shields. Everyone who currently has one loves them. They're lightweight, comfortable, and have repeatedly stood up to fully involved house fire uses. They can take a beating.

Great Helment

by

Love this helmet. Ive used it over 5 years now with no complants.

Great helmet!!

by

This helmet is perfect. It's relatively lightweight, it's the most comfy helmet I've ever worn, and it has great accessories. I got the bourkes and the defender visor. It's great and I would recommend this helmet to anyone who fights fire.

Great service

by

Beautiful helmet, lightweight. Almost dont want to wear it to a fire so I dont mess it up.

Excellent, sold on Cairns

by

Excellent helmet, good balance of protection and good looks

TOO HEAVY & NOT FOR A BIG HEAD

by

THIS HELMET IS TOO HEAVY. THIS HELMET WOULD FIT SOMEONE WITH A SMALLER HEAD BETTER.

BEST HELMET EVER !!!!!!

by

This helmet is the best one i have ever owned. i have had four or five helmets from Bullard and Morning Pride. Cairns is the best one yet the 1044 is cheaper then the 1010. It just don't have the glossy finish. I have replaced all the stickers. I have 8 shamrocks around the top and the US and Irish flag on the back bill. Also I have an FDNY 343 sticker. I got my leather front from here and its great.

1044 Deluxe

by

I found this to be the best buy. I wanted a traditional modern fire helmet, that looked good with no ""in the way"" flip down visor or goggles, that was still NFPA compliant. Helmet weight is low along with the center of gravity, and looks great in black. Bottom line: best money I have ever spent for something that might save my life.

didnt quite fit right

by

the helmet itself fits ok a little heavy but the corners of the inside cap dig into my head mainly in the back but still very uncomfortable after a period of time

My Second 1044

by

My second 1044, really like this helmet. With some minor adjustments out of the box, it's very comfortable (especially w/ the leather liner). Like the features (defenders especially). Relatively lightweight for a traditional helmet. Great construction. The only real con I've had with both helmets is that you need to be particularly careful when screwing on the front shield. The nuts built into the helmet strip very easily if the screw isn't threaded correctly. Otherwise, great helmet. Would highly recommend the 1044 deluxe with defenders to anyone.

Very Good Helmet

by

A very good Helmet for the money, looks very nice and very comfortable

Very good helmet!!

by

Very good helmet.. Construction is great. Like anything it needs to have time to break in.(the leather liner) The helmet is pretty heavy compared to the one I used to have. The defender visor is by far the best, way better than goggles. Goggles get trashed in no time sitting up there exposed to everything. Again this is a great product!

Great Helmet Great Price!

by

I ordered the Product on Sunday Night and recieved it Tues, with regular shipping! I couldn't ask for a quicker shipping!! (I live in western PA, around Washington)

Good and Clean

by

This is the best helmet next to 880 Chicagos and N5A New Yorkers. I swear by it, and my department, to my pleasure, is issuing these as the new helmet for structual firefighters.

It's done it's job

by

Out of the box onto my head six years of service many hot fires 70 plus. If you take care of your helment it will stay nice. If you clean your helment it will still look new. Many hours of heat fire and smoke and the carins 1044 has not missed a beat and saved me more than once.

Everything i expected!

by

I bought this to relace my Bullard LTX (dept issue). Big difference it the weight and overall feel with helmet but i am very satisfied with the product. It is very well constructed and it is great to actually get a quality product for what you pay for it. Also, the defenders do not fit over prescription eyeglasses.

Find something else

by

Was given this helmet after promotion. Used it in three live fire training situations. Very uncomfortable. White edging around brim melted to my gloves when I reached up to adjust the helmet. Rode very high despite adjusting. Thermo-couplers showed that temp wasn't extreme.

Great Dome Piece

by

Be Careful with the 4' Face Shield I used the borkes and goggles but a buddy of mine had the face shield down and when debris landed on his helmet the shield broke his nose.

A traditional solid performer

by

These are good helmets overall, they are light, durable and work. I don't like the leather sweatband they went to, other wise they are a solid piece of equipment. Like everything else you have to decide where your trade offs are going to be. I have a traditional Bullard I bought for use at my Volley Company, The Bullard is more comfortable but much heavier, the 1044 is far lighter and if you replace the leather sweat band to the old ones they work pretty good. The jury is still out on the Defenders, maybe when the leather sweatbands get settled with use they sit a bit better but they serve their purpose from day one.

Excellent choice Cairns 1044 Helmet

by

well Designed would recommend to any brother firefighter.

Great helmet !

Great Helmet ! Traditional look with modern feel & safety features

Q&A's:

"Can you choose a color? (like black, red, white, etc) Or is there only one standard color?"

The dropdown for selecting a 1044 helmet offers black, red, yellow and white. http://www.thefirestore.com/store/category.cfm/cid_1448_1044/

"What is the difference of standard and deluxe"

Below listed are the differences between the standard and delux; Standard Configuration Includes: Flannel Cushion Liner, Nomex Earlaps 6"" Silk Screened Maltese Cross Front Holder Deluxe Configuration Includes: Leather Cushion Liner Flannel Crown Pad PBI/Kevlar Earlaps 6"" 3-D Carved Brass Eagle Front Holder

"Why is there not a ""Blue"" color for this helmet?"

Cairns does not make the 1044 in blue, but the 1010 is available in blue. http://www.thefirestore.com/store/product.aspx/productId/1974/Cairns-1010-Traditional-Fiberglass-Helmet-NFPA-OSHA/

"I have a friend that has the 880 Chicago helmet and its way to small but I do have a pall Conway that fits good. I wanted to know what size the helmet adjusts to ???"

The 1010 & 1044 Helmets each have a 3 position rear ratchet height adjustment ansd a wide range head sizes 6 3/8 to 8 3/8 head sizes

"Will the defender face shield be compatable with an SCBA?"

Seeing how this helmet is made by Cairns a division of MSA who also Mfg the MSA SCBA, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be marketing a helmet that wouldn't be compatable for any SCBA An exclusive SCBA interface front headband adjustment matches the fit of any SCBA mask

"Will the defender face shield be compatable with an SCBA?"

When dropped down, the Defender sits directly over your eyes, much as a pair of safety glasses would, so no, you can't use the Defender with your mask. Our department issues these new 1044 helmets with the Defender, in replacement of the older 1010 with the 4"" Face Shield. Personally, I really want my face shield back!

"Does the Defender shield meet the NFPA and OSHA standards for eye protection so I don't have to wear goggles on my helmet?"

Tough, through color, DuraGlas fiberglass and high-temp resin composite resists cracking and chipping Perfect combination of durability and performance in a lightweight design Three-position, rear-ratchet height adjustment ensures a secure and comfortable fit Six-way overhead strap suspension system reduces shock transmission at the top of the helmet while providing a snug, comfortable fit **** Certified to meet NFPA 1971 Specifications, 2007 Edition for Structural Fire Fighting ***** All earlaps come in yellow It tells you this in the description, and under the heading ********** Cairns Cairns 1044 Helmets, NFPA ***********

"What is the weight of the helmet?"

helmet weighs 56 Oz.

"What is the height difference between the 880 and the 1044 i want to know if going to the 1044 is worth the extra 50 dollars. What is the major reason for the difference between the two helmets. I have the 880 and going to give it to my wife to fight fires in and consider moving to the 1044 but I do not want to have a massivley different helmet from my wife."

The 880 has the lowest profile on the market according to Cairns, the 1044 liner is adjustable 3 different ways, you will have to adjust it to your comfort, once it's on your head there shouldn't be very much difference that you will notice. As far as the price difference of $50.00 I don't see that. If you take a 880FSY Chicago it sells for $236.99, and a 1044TSY sells for $241.99 a $5.00 difference. I compared the 880 Standard yellow, with a 4"" face shield vs. the 1044 standard with a defender eye protection. You sound like your pro 880 helmet wearer, why are you switching to a 1044, and passing the 880 down to the wife?

"What is the height difference between the 880 and the 1044 i want to know if going to the 1044 is worth the extra 50 dollars. What is the major reason for the difference between the two helmets. I have the 880 and going to give it to my wife to fight fires in and consider moving to the 1044 but I do not want to have a massivley different helmet from my wife."

I am passing this down to my wife because i have worn it and know it is safe and I have been promoted in the house so I am going to a Black hat. I wanted to make sure that we set a department standard and maintain uniformity. I only had the yellow one for about a year and she just joined the department to show her support and drive in the things that I love to do.. I am an active duty Soldier who volunteers with a County Fire District where I live. so it is a good thing to do as a couple.....

"what the low temperature to use it"

You're going to have to send us more information on what you're asking us. We have no idea what ""low temperature"" means?

"Which tetrahedrons are the right ones to replace the originals on the helmet?"

You want to use this P/N 23-652 Reflexite Lime Yellow Tetra's 20 per sheet, call our call center @ 800-852-6088 and give them the part number I think price is $12.49 per sheet and they can get your order on it's way to you.

"What is the measurement of the base of the helmet. I am trying to buy a helmet band but I need the measurement around the base of the helmet"

Ok, were not sure what you mean or need the measurement of the base of the helmet? If you are looking for a rubber band strap that you add to your helmet there are no special sizes, there are 2 different part numbers for this; RUB-1 is a black band and the most popular one, the other 1 is a Pink band(P/N 300-04) and only difference is the color and price between the 2. Black band is $3.99 Pink $4.99

"buying this as a gift - what is the difference between the standard & the deluxe?"

Carol, Standard Configuration Includes: - Flannel Cushion Liner, - Nomex Earlaps - 6"" Silk Screened Maltese Cross Front Holder Deluxe Configuration Includes: - Leather Cushion Liner - Flannel Crown Pad - PBI/Kevlar Earlaps - 6"" 3-D Carved Brass Eagle Front Holder

"in the description it says the earflaps come in yellow. is black earflaps an option?"

Sam, yes they are an option, but will have to be special ordered, all of our helmets we stock are yellow nomex or gold/tan PBI-Kevlar

"All earlaps come in yellow it says in the description how can you order it in black like the picture"

Thanks for catching that SAP, its a typo. The black earlaps are available with the Standard configuration, the yellow earlaps come with the Deluxe configuration.

"Does the reflective sticker that go all around the helmet come with the helmet, or do you have to buy them separately?"

If you are asking about the Lime Yellow stickers that come on the helmets, the manufacturers of the helmets can not ship them out of their plants with out them being on the helmets, they are part of the NFPA 1971 standard that the helmets need to meet, no stickers no NFPA compliant. There are 2 colors that meet the requirements Lime Yellow, or Red Orange, either color must be on the helmet before they are shipped, after the customer gets their helmet, it's their responsibly then, and they can do whatever they want.

"What's the weight or the 1044?"

Bunns, 56oz

"If I install morning pride bourkes on it can it meet nfpa????"

NO, you will take an NFPA helmet, and make it a NON NFPA helmet by trying to adapt Honeywell EZ Flips to a Cairns helmet, you will void all and any warranty's on your helmet, here's another heads up also there are no such thing as ""Morning Pride Bourke's. Bourke's is a trade name of their own, Morning pride is a trademark name for Honeywell emergency responder .
